Flood water likely to start receding from Monday

The flood situation in Sylhet region is unlikely to improve before Monday while the water will continue rising for 3-4 more days in the northern districts, an official of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) said.

“The flood water will start receding since Monday through Bhairab Bazar. This may improve the situation. In the northern districts, the water is likely to continue swelling up for three to four more days. The water will increase in the Jamuna basin. However, the situation will not deteriorate,” FFWC executive engineer Arifuzzaman Bhuian said.

Vast areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts have been inundated by the flood triggered by incessant rain and the onrush of upstream water. The authorities deployed army to rescue the flood-hit locals.

According to the Met office forecast, the country will experience heavy rain for the next 24 hours. Besides, four divisional cities will witness incessant rain.

Monsoon is active over Bangladesh and moderate over North Bay. Light to moderate rain/thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind and intense lightning flashes is likely to occur at most places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram  and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country, the weather forecast read.
