In a letter addressed to the people of Tamil Nadu, actor Vijay, 49, popularly known as Thalapathy, announced his decision to join politics, according to The Indian Express.

He stated that his fan club turned non-governmental organisation has been working for the welfare of the people for many years but it cannot bring full-fledged social, economic, and political reform on its own and for that political power was required.

Quoting the couplet, ‘Enni Thuniga Karmam (Acting after due consideration)’, from Thirukkural, Vijay said they have decided to name the party Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). He added that the process to formally register the party has been initiated. The popular actor noted that the party leader, functionaries, and the rules of the party were chosen and approved at a TVK meeting in Chennai on January 25.

“Contesting the 2026 assembly elections and winning them to provide the political change the people of the state aspire to is our goal. After receiving the recognition from the Election Commission, after the Lok Sabha election is over, our journey presenting our party ideology, principle, party flag, and symbol and our plans for the growth of the state of Tamil Nadu will begin,” he said.

Vijay noted that it was decided in the January 25 meeting that they will not contest the 2024 Lok Sabha polls or even lend their support to any party.

In his statement, Vijay noted that there was administrative disorder and rampant corruption on one side of the political divide and caste and communal politics on the other.

“As far as I am concerned, politics is not a business, it is a service to people. I have learnt lessons from my predecessors and have been preparing myself for a long time. Hence, politics is not a time pass for me, it is a deep quest. I am willing to dedicate myself fully to it… That is the way I believe I can repay my debt of gratitude to the people of Tamil Nadu,” Vijay said.
