A man died from a bullet wound and 10 others were injured in a clash between two groups fighting for establishing supremacy in Munshiganj today.
The clash continued from 3am to 7am on Saturday in the Sadar Upazila`s Khashkandi and Chhoto Mollakandi villages, said Md Aminul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of the Sadar Police Station.
Rabbi, 19, and Parvez, 20, were shot during the clash. The two were first taken to Munshiganj General Hospital but on-duty doctor sent them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Parvez died on the way to Dhaka.
The two groups led by Mamun Haldar-Najir Haldar and Ahmed got into an argument early on Saturday. Shots were fired and hundreds of cocktail were detonated, turning the village into a war zone. Ten to 12 residences were vandalised creating panic among the villagers.
Ahmed, the leader of the Ahmed group, alleged, "Early on Saturday morning supporters of Selim Haldar, the brother of Mamun Haldar, attacked the homes of my activists and supporters, causing widespread vandalism and stirring unrest by detonating improvised explosives."
"When my supporters attempted to resist them, they opened fire. Parvez and Rabbi received bullets. At least 10 people have been injured. Homes have been vandalised and looted."
Mamun Haldar denied the allegations and made counter claims against Ahmed saying that since Friday afternoon, the criminals in the Ahmed group had been threatening our people."
"Last night a clash broke out between the two sides when hand-made explosives were detonated at the homes of my supporters that left eight to 10 of my supporters injured," Mamun Haldar alleged.
OC Aminul claimed that the situation has remained calm at the moment.
Police were conducting raids in the two villages to arrest those involved in the clash, he added.
