Shahriar: Ex-diplomat Khairuzzaman to be repatriated from Malaysia

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam has said Bangladesh is taking steps to bring back former High Commissioner to Malaysia M Khairuzzaman, who was detained in the Southeast Asian contry, reports BSS.

“M Khairuzzaman is currently at a deportation centre in Malaysia. As far as I know, there is an opportunity to quiz him again and probe the case against him. I hope that we would bring him back to Bangladesh soon and then the law ministry and home ministry will jointly handle the case against him," he said.

The state minister was talking to the media on Thursday after the news of Khairuzzaman being booked Malaysian immigration police, was spread.

Shahriar said Malaysian government, in a latter, has confirmed that M Khairuzzamanwas arrested for violating immigration related laws there.

“I don’t know much about it actually (the law that was broken) . . . the embassy knows. It may be an issue of overstay or the process, through which he (M Khairuzzaman) was staying there, has been expired,” he said.

Responding to another question, he said it will be checked if M Khairuzzaman really has a UN refugee card or not.

Shahriar informed the media that he does not know whether M Khairuzzaman had a UN refugee card or not.

Malaysian police arrested the former Bangladesh high commissioner, who has been living  there as a refugee for more than a decade.

Khairuzzaman was an accused in the 1975 Jail Killing case and was later acquitted.

He was appointed high commissioner to Malaysia in 2007 during the then caretaker government.

He was recalled to Dhaka after Awami League came to the power in 2009. Khairuzzaman  reportedly obtained an UN refugee card to stay there.
