Gas has been discovered in well number 3 within the Shahjadpur-Sundalpur gas field located in Companyganj upazila of Noakhali.

Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex) said they detected gas in three different zones within the well. The officials initiated the Drill Stem Test (DST) at the lowest depth of the well on Saturday, February 9.

Project Director of Bapex, Prince Md. Al Helal, confirmed the discovery, stating, "Following our excavation efforts, experimental DST testing commenced on Saturday."

Currently, the testing is ongoing at the lower zone, with the well reaching a total depth of 3,385 meters.

The testing activities are being conducted between depths of 3,041 to 3,046 meters and 3,057 to 3,064 meters within the lower zone. Further testing will continue for the other two zones, and the total gas reserves can only be determined after the completion of the DST test.

Experts anticipate that this well could potentially supply up to 10 million cubic feet of gas per day to the national grid. Moreover, the gas pressure observed in the lower zone suggests the possibility of extracting even more gas from this well.

Bapex initiated the excavation efforts for well number 3 of the gas field in early November of last year.

The Shahjadpur-Sundalpur gas field was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on January 8, 2013, following the production commencement of well number 1. Subsequently, gas extraction commenced from well number 2 of the Sundalpur gas field.
