Flood situation likely to worsen as water at key rivers increasing

Water of key rivers in the north-eastern region of the country continues rising.

Water is flowing above the danger mark at 9 points of 6 rivers worsening the flood situation at the low-lying lands of Tangail, Sirajganj, Rajbari, Pabna and Manikganj.

Hundreds of thousands are marooned in and around the areas. Communication links have been snapped. Scarcity of cattle feed has been prevailing as most of the farmlands inundated by tidal water.

On the other hand, the flood situation remains stabilized in Faridpur and Shariatpur.

However, flood forecasting and warning centre said, water might increase in next 3-7 days and the flood situation is likely to deteriorate.

Sardar Uday Raihan, sub-divisional engineer at the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center, said on Thursday (August 26th) evening that flood conditions were already prevailing in Rajbari, Faridpur, Manikganj and Shariatpur areas.

The water rise of Jamuna may continue for another 3/4 days and the rise of Padma water may continue for next 1 week. Then the situation may improve.

Meanwhile, the flood situation in the district has deteriorated the most as all the rivers in Tangail, including the Jamuna, continue to rise due to upstream water and heavy rains. The low-lying lands of Sadar Upazila, Kalihati, Nagarpur, Bhunapur, Basail and Mirzapur Upazilas along the Jamuna River have been inundated due to overflow of water from the dam. These crop lands have been submerged.

After remaining stable for two days, the water of Jamuna river in Sirajganj has been flowing over the danger line since Thursday (August 26) and the water of the inland rivers of the district is also increasing. The flood situation in the district is deteriorating. Thousands of people in five upazilas along the banks of the Jamuna and inland rivers have been flooded. The waters of Jamuna, Dhaleshwari and Jhenai rivers are flowing over the danger zone. The dam is overflowing and one low area after another is being flooded. River erosion has occurred.
