Delta still four times more dominant than Omicron: BSMMU

About 20 per cent of the newly detected Covid-19 patients are infected by the Omicron variant of the virus while the delta variant accounts for 80 per cent of the total cases.

The information was revealed in a study conducted by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).

The hospital disclosed the findings of the study on Tuesday after testing samples collected between 8 December, 2021, and 8 January, 2022.

Genome sequencing was done of total 96 samples, and nine of them (20%) were found to be of the Omicron variant, BSMMU VC Professor Sharfuddin Ahmed said while addressing a press briefing.

"Most of the people were diagnosed with the Delta variant. None of the patients admitted at the hospital had Omicron.

"However, samples collected from the outdoor unit tested positive for the latter," he added.
