ACC lawyer affirms action against Benazir Ahmed amidst wealth allegations

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed might face consequences if the information regarding the corruption accusations proven relevant, despite his high profile, according to Khurshid Alam Khan, representing the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Speaking on Monday at the Supreme Court premises, Khan emphasized the importance of transparency in the investigation, stating, "No individual is the focal point here."

Highlighting the necessity of thorough analysis and verification of the facts presented in documents, Khan emphasized the need for patience in the process, stating, "The ACC is not a genie; it doesn‍‍`t operate based on mere speculation. We must await the outcome."

Recent reports published in a national daily have raised allegations of significant illicit wealth amassed by former IGP Benazir Ahmed, sparking widespread discussion. One report titled ‍‍`Aladdin‍‍`s Lamp in Benazir‍‍`s House‍‍` detailed various financial assets allegedly belonging to Ahmed, including the Savannah Eco Resort in Sahapur Union of Gopalganj, among other investments.

According to the report, Ahmed‍‍`s wealth encompasses luxurious properties in prime locations of Dhaka, extensive land holdings near the capital, and ownership stakes in multiple companies, amounting to potentially over Tk 500 crore in investments.

The report further alleges ownership of high-value assets such as flats and houses, including a duplex house valued at Tk 45 crore in Purbachal, alongside significant land holdings. Despite his lengthy service spanning over 34 years and 7 months, Ahmed‍‍`s reported salary and allowances amount to only Tk 1 crore 84 lakh 89 thousand 200.
