Malaysia landslide death toll rises to 24, 9 more missing

The death toll from a landslide at a Malaysian campsite rose to 24, rescuers on Saturday found the bodies of a woman and two children, authorities said.

Nine more people are still missing after a predawn landslide hit a campsite at an organic farm on Friday near the town of Batang Kali just outside the capital Kuala Lumpur.

The landslide took place around 03:00 on Friday (19:00 GMT Thursday) just outside the hilly Genting Highlands, north of the capital Kuala Lumpur.

Authorities are scrambling to rescue people who may be buried in the mud.

More than 90 people had been camped at a farm site on the side of a road.

Malaysia‍‍`s National Disaster Management Agency said it had rescued 53 people so far..

The 24 victims included seven children and 13 women. Authorities were still carrying out autopsies and waiting for next of kin to identify the victims.

A mother and her toddler daughter were found Friday hugging each other in a heart-rending scene, rescuers said. Seven people were hospitalized and dozens more, including three Singaporeans, were rescued unharmed.
