The new subvariant of the coronavirus, JN.1, can infect anyone, even those who have received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccination, according to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Vice-Chancellor Prof Sharfuddin Ahmed.

At a press conference at the BSMMU, the VC said patients have been found with the new Jn.1 sub-variant of Covid have "less severe symptoms".

Sharfuddin was addressing at a press conference organized by BSMMU to announce the findings of the latest genome sequencing research on the Covid.

According to the VC, the World Health Organization reported the new subvariant JN.1 earlier this year. From the third week of January to the first week of February, BSMMU analyzed the genomes of 48 Covid patients. The study identified a new subvariant of the corona micron type, JN.1, in three patients.

‍‍`‍‍`The symptoms of this sub-variant are similar to its other types. Although patients have mild symptoms of fever, chills, sore throat, headache, and mild cough, there is no option to continue research to know its long-term effects,‍‍`‍‍` he said.

He said that one of the three affected people had traveled outside the country.

The BSMMU VC suggested that even people with minor symptoms should undergo a Covid test.

Sharfuddin, who led the genome sequencing research at BSMMU, said the affected patients received at least two doses of the Covid vaccine.

Patients with this subvariant have few symptoms and a low hospitalization rate, said Sharifuddin.
