Torrential rains have led to waterlogging and overflow of drains in various parts of Gazipur city causing huge public sufferings.

Passengers are suffering due to waterlogging at various points from Tongi to Chandana intersection on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. The suffering is more at the Bhogra bypass intersection of the highway as it is submerged in water.

Joydebpur Bazar and Bus Stand Road, the main market of the district city, have been submerged under water since last night.

Many shops were also flooded, and goods were damaged. Traders and holiday shoppers said they are suffering because there is no drainage system to drain the water quickly.

An 8-km-long traffic jam on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway from Chandana Chowrasta to Rajendrapur intersection in Gazipur was seen around 7:00am on Friday.

Traffic has been moving slowly for 12 km from Tongi to Chowrasta since last night. The long traffic jam was caused after a truck broke down on the road in the Rajendrapur area. It took two hours to remove the truck from the highway.

Vehicular movements were disrupted due to waterlogging at some places on the highway, including the Bhogra intersection. Some vehicles are also breaking down, said Alamgir Hossain, deputy commissioner (south) of the Traffic Division of Gazipur Metropolitan Police.

Members of the traffic department are working tirelessly to keep the traffic normal even in the rain, he added.
