New Zealand experienced a powerful earthquake of 7.1 Magnitude

Strong earthquake hits New Zealand's Kermadec Islands region on Thursday (March 16) morning.. A tsunami warning was issued in the surrounding area immediately after the earthquake. Later, however, it was withdrawn. So far no casualties or damages have been reported due to this earthquake.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude of the earthquake that struck New Zealand was 7.1 on the Richter scale. Its origin was 10 km below the surface.

A tsunami warning was issued there after the earthquake, said the U.S. Tsunami Warning System.

Earlier, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit the northern Kermadec Islands of New Zealand on March 4. Its origin was 152 km below the surface.

New Zealand's Kermadec Islands and the surrounding area are considered to be a part of the Pacific 'Ring of Fire'. Volcanic eruptions also occur in this region.
