Road crashes kill 10 motorcyclists on Eid day

At least 10 people, including schoolboys, have been killed in road crashes involving motorcycles in parts of the country on Eid day.

Four people, three of them teenagers, have been killed in separate road crashes involving motorbikes in Dhaka and Netrokona.

In Dhaka, a motorcyclist died after a car hit him from behind in front of BTV Centre in Rampura on Saturday.

The deceased was identified at Mehedi Hasan (30).

The motorbike fell in front of Rampura’s BTV building at 11 am and after that an unidentified vehicle hit him from behind, said Khokon, a CNG-run autorickshaw driver who witnessed the incident.

Passers-by and Khokon rescued Mehedi from the spot and took him to the Emergency Department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

In Barishal, a sub-inspector of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Special Branch was killed after a bus hit his motorcycle in the Rupatoli Bashundhara Housing area on the Barishal-Jhalakathi road.

Md Anwar Hossain, chief of Kotwali Model Police Station, said the sub-inspector, Md Foyez, 33, was returning home to Nolchhiti from his in-laws’ house in the city.

Foyez’s cousin Md Emdadul Haque, an official of the Anti-Corruption Commission, was admitted to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital after being injured in the accident.

In Gazipur, Jibon Hossain, 24, a resident of Joydebpur, died after his motorcycle veered out of control and hit a roadside tree on the Kaliakoir-Sreepur road in the afternoon. Sudeep Chakrabarty, a doctor at Sreepur Upazila Health Complex, said Jibon was brought dead to the facility.

In Madaripur, a 15-year-old schoolboy, named Nazmul Howlader, died after his vehicle crashed into a milestone at Shibchar upazila in the afternoon.

His friends Jahid Hossain and Akram were admitted to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex after the accident in the Jinargate area of Dwitiokhanda, said Sub-Inspector Jahid Hossain of Shibchar Police Station.

They were returning home after visiting Nazmul’s aunt, he said.

DMCH Police Outpost in-charge Inspector Bachchu Mia said the body has been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy.

In Netrokona, three teenagers were killed and two were injured in a collision between two motorcycles in Kalmakanda upazila.

The accident happened around 2:30pm on Saturday.

The deceased are Abu Bakar, 15, son of Shahjahan of Goatla village of Lengura union of the upazila, Masum Mia, 16, son of Mannach Mia of the same village and Suman Mia, 15, son of Iman Ali of Gobindpur village of Kharnai union.

According to the police and locals, Abu Bakar and Masum were going to the border area on a motorcycle from Gowatala village on the day of Eid. Their motorcycle collided with a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction in Boubazar area, leaving two people dead on the spot and three riders on the other motorcycle seriously injured. 

Later, locals rescued them and sent them to the nearby Upazila Health Complex where another injured succumbed to his injuries. 

In Satkhira, two teenage brothers died at Tala upaiza after their motorcycle collided with a microbus in the Noapara area, said Chowdhury Karim, chief of the local police station. The victims were Imran Hossain, 19, and Rifat Hossain, 16.

Sujon Gazi, 25, who was injured in the accident, said they were returning home in the wee hours of Saturday after Eid shopping.
