Intense gunfire breaks out with KNF in Thanchi Bazaar

Heavy exchanges of gunfire erupted between police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and members of the armed group Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) in several areas of Bandarban‍‍`s Thanchi Bazaar, including the vicinity behind the hospital and adjacent to the police station.

The skirmish ignited at 8:40 pm on Thursday, as confirmed by Thanchi upazila executive officer (UNO) Md. Mamun. He stated, "There are reports of intense firing involving police, BGB, and KNF members in the area."

When questioned about the incident, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal responded, "We have been made aware of the firing in Thanchi. We are addressing the situation with utmost seriousness."

Captain of Rapid Action Battalion-15 Lt. Col. HM Sajjad Hossain remarked, "Earlier, we received information about gunfire in Thanchi. However, we currently lack further details."

An eyewitness, a tourist staying in the vicinity, recounted the harrowing experience, stating, "While dining at a hotel, gunfire suddenly erupted. We hastily abandoned our meal and sought refuge in a nearby shop with lights switched off. The intensity of the shooting is alarming, with several locals also taking shelter in our location."

Reflecting on the gravity of the situation, a concerned businessman, choosing to remain anonymous, commented, "The situation is dire, with heavy gunfire ongoing."

The exchange of gunfire underscores the volatility and tension in the region, prompting heightened concerns among residents and visitors alike. Authorities continue to investigate the incident and work towards restoring peace and stability in the affected areas.
