Bangladesh reports steep increase in Covid-19 cases for consecutive days

Bangladesh has been experiencing a steep increase in Covid-19 cases since three consecutive days, spreading fear of an omicron outbreak. Four more fatalities linked to Covid-19 were also reported during same period. 

On Monday (January 3) in a 24-hour count, health authorities reported 674 fresh infections. With the latest development, the aggregate Covid-19 cases has climbed to 1,587,140. 

The tally of Covid-19 deaths rose to  28,081. 

Even though there is a substantial increase in the number of fresh infections, according to the health authorities, the daily  test positivity rate slightly declined to 3.3 percent from Sunday’s (January 2) 2.91 percent after 19,980 samples were tested in the last 24-hours. 

The capital Dhaka recorded the highest numbers in terms of both cases and fatalities. Among the right divisions Dhaka recorded 568 infections.

Meanwhile, another 214 people recovered from the infectious disease, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,549,771.

The figures were recorded between Sunday 8:00 am and Monday 8:00 am. 

The latest figures put the recovery rate at 97.65 percent and the mortality rate at 1.77 percent. 

The latest Covid-19 situation in the country was revealed by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in its routine daily statement.
