Arrest warrants against Tarique Rahman and his wife Zubaida in graft case

A Dhaka court on Tuesday issued arrest warrants against BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Zubaida Rahman in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over owning assets in excess of known sources of income.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Asaduzzaman issued the arrest warrants against them. The Judge also directed the officer-in-charge (OC) of Cantonment Police Station in the capital to submit the progressive report on the arrest warrants against them by January 5.

Mosharraf Hossain Kajol, the lawyer of Anti-Corruption Commission, confirmed the information to the media.

Earlier on June 26 this year, the High Court declared BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Zubaida Rahman “fugitives” in a 2007 graft case filed by the ACC on allegations of misappropriating Tk4.8 crore.

The ACC filed a case at Dhaka’s Kafrul Police Station in 2007, accusing them of owning Tk 48.15 million beyond known sources of income, keeping information on assets secret and acquiring assets beyond known sources of income.

In the case Tarique‍‍`s mother-in-law Iqbal Mand Banu was named as the third suspect but her name was later dropped from the case following her death.
