Sri Lanka lost to New Zealand in World Cup qualifiers

New Zealand won the three-match series against Sri Lanka by 2-0 and end the Asian side‍‍`s chances of directly qualifying for this year‍‍`s World Cup in India. With excellent bowling from Matt Henry, Henry Shipley, and Daryl Mitchell and Will Young‍‍`s outstanding innings, the Kiwis won the final match by 6 wickets.

Now the former champions have to play the World Cup qualifiers and come to the 2023 World Cup. In the ICC World Cup Super League points list, Sri Lanka‍‍`s points are now 81 in 24 matches. The team is at number 9. As per the rules, the 8 teams at the top of the points table along with hosts India will play directly in the 2023 World Cup. Already, 7 teams including Bangladesh have directly qualified for the World Cup.

The fight is on for the remaining spot. West Indies are at number 8 with 88 points. All their matches before the World Cup are over. If Sri Lanka had won the last match, they would have topped the Caribbean. West Indies will also have to play qualifiers.
