Convict in BDR mutiny case dies at DMCH

A death row convict in the BDR mutiny case has passed away at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Baten, 70. He took his last breath on Friday night while undergoing treatment.

DMCH in-charge Bachhu Mia said that Baten fell sick at Dhaka Central Jail around 1:30am and later taken to hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

The body was kept at DMCH morgue for autopsy, he added.

Abdul Baten was sentenced to death in connection with the mutiny in the now defunct BDR.

14 years back, on February 25, 2009, over hundreds Bangladesh Rifles men rose up in an armed revolt at Darbar Hall during the three-day "BDR Week". Still the victims' families and the accused in the carnage case waiting for justice due to the lengthy legal process. At least 829 people, mostly BDR members, were accused in the carnage case.

Some 152 people were sentenced to death and 423 others to different jail terms in the killing case. Besides, 277 accused were acquitted in the country’s largest-ever killing case.
