4 million now marooned

The flood situation in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts has worsened. The flood water continued increasing and inundating fresh areas due to incessant rain and onrush of upstream water.  

The flood left at least 4 million people stranded in the two districts. Locals say such a flood is unprecedented in recent decades.

The flood-hit people are struggling for drinking water and food. The children and elderly people are the worst sufferers from the disaster. However, rescuers are working to take the locals into the shelter.

All upazilas of Sylhet district and half of Sunamganj district have been submerged by the swelling water along with the Sylhet-Sunamganj highway and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman road on the Sylhet-Bholaganj route.

Sylhet city went into a broad blackout after the Kumargaon power station in Sylhet was swamped also snapping the mobile network.  

Meanwhile, the rivers in Sylhet continued swelling up. The city has been experiencing incessant rain since Saturday morning prompting waterlogging in different parts of the city. The met office forecasted heavy rain in the next 48 hours.

However, the joint rescue team of the army and navy are working relentlessly to bring the flood-hit people to safety. A total of 10 platoon army, six medical teams and a naval team of 35 members are working since the morning. Besides, the rescuers are using crews and the air force’s chopper.

The disaster management and relief department of Sylhet district said, as many as 17 lakh 50 thousand 7 thousand 900 sacks of dried food have been allocated in the area. Besides, the ministry also sent 8 thousand packets of food and taka 30 lakh.
