AL factional clash over 'toll collection' in Jhenaidah leaves two dead

In a broad daylight horror, two people were killed and two others injured in clashes between two local factions of Awami League reportedly over collecting toll in Jhenaidah on Thursday morning.

The incident took place around 10:30am near Chowgachha bus stand in Kotchandpur town, reports The Daily Star.

The deceased are Jibon Hossain (20) of Akherkendrapara in Kotchadpur town and Akhter Hossain (21) of Elangi village in the upazila.

The injured were identified as Sabbir Hossain and Sohag Hossain.

Officer-in-charge of Kotchandpur Police Station Md Moin Uddin said the clash occurred between the supporters of Kotchandpur Municipal Mayor Sahiduzzaman and local lawmaker Shafiqul Azam Khan Chanchal over the collection of municipal tolls.

Four injured people were taken to Kotchandpur Upazila Health Complex where two supporters of the mayor were declared dead.

Ishrat Jahan Jerin, an on-duty doctor at the health complex, said Jibon Hossain died as soon as he was brought to the hospital.

Akhtar was referred to Jashore hospital and died on the way. The other two are being treated at a local hospital, she said.

Municipal mayor Sahiduzzaman was called several times for his comment but he did not pick up the call while the mobile phone of Shafiqul Azam Khan Chanchal was found switched off.
