Former US President Donald Trump sanctioned a secret operation in China by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) aimed at influencing public opinion against its government via social media platforms.
Officials with direct knowledge of the classified operation, on condition of anonymity disclosed that the initiative commenced two years into Trump`s presidency, Reuters reported.
It said, three former officials disclosed that the CIA assembled a small team of operatives tasked with using fake online personas to disseminate negative narratives about Xi Jinping`s administration.
Additionally, these operatives allegedly leaked derogatory intelligence to foreign media outlets. Notably, this covert campaign, which commenced in 2019, has not been previously disclosed.
