Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to embark on a trip to China in May for discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, marking what could potentially be Putin‍‍`s inaugural overseas journey of his new presidential term, as indicated by five sources with knowledge of the situation.

The re-election of Putin has sparked contrasting reactions from Western governments, with many criticizing the process as unfair and undemocratic. However, countries like China, India, and North Korea have offered congratulations to the seasoned leader for securing another six years in power. These differing responses underscore the geopolitical tensions that have deepened following Russia‍‍`s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

According to one of the sources who preferred to remain anonymous, Putin‍‍`s forthcoming visit to China was confirmed to Reuters. This information was corroborated independently by four other sources, also speaking under anonymity.

Another source suggested that Putin‍‍`s trip to China is likely to occur in the latter half of May. Additionally, two sources revealed that Putin‍‍`s visit to China is expected to precede Xi‍‍`s planned journey to Europe.

When questioned about the Reuters report, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that details regarding Putin‍‍`s travel arrangements would be disclosed closer to the scheduled dates. Peskov also mentioned ongoing preparations for several presidential visits and high-level engagements.

China‍‍`s foreign ministry has yet to provide a response to requests for comments on the matter.

The relationship between China and Russia has been characterized by an expansive partnership since February 2022, when Putin‍‍`s visit to Beijing was swiftly followed by Russia‍‍`s military intervention in Ukraine. This move ignited one of the deadliest conflicts in Europe since World War Two.

In the eyes of the United States, China represents its primary competitor, while Russia is viewed as a significant nation-state threat. President Joe Biden has articulated a vision for the 21st century centered on a fundamental rivalry between democracies and autocracies.

Both Putin and Xi espouse a similar worldview, which perceives the West as in decline, coinciding with China‍‍`s challenge to U.S. dominance across various domains, including technology, espionage, and military capabilities.
