Iran sentences anti-government protester to death

In the midst of ongoing unrest in the nation, Iran‍‍`s Revolutionary Court has sentenced one anti-government protester to death and given jail terms to five others, according to official report on Sunday.

The verdict most likely represents the first death sentence in the trials of people detained for taking part in the anti-clerical rule rallies that have swept Iran over the past few weeks.

Iranian authorities have charged over 2,000 people since the unrest began last September following the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini, 22, who was detained for "improper hijab," Iran‍‍`s mandatory head covering.

According to the sources, another five people were sentenced to prison, ranged from five to 10 years for "gathering and conspiring to commit crimes against national security and disturbing public order,".
