Conflict continues in Sudan: death toll rises to 200

In Sudan, the conflict between the military and the country‍‍`s paramilitary forces continues. About 200 people have been killed and 1800 others injured in this fight so far.

The conflict, which began on Saturday, has damaged many Sudanese hospitals and reduced medical care and food supplies. AFP informs.

A battle between Sudan‍‍`s army and the notorious paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has destabilized the country. In the capital, Khartoum, two rival forces are fighting over control of the presidential palace, state television and army headquarters.

Experts say the battle in Sudan‍‍`s capital, which is known to be chronically volatile, is unprecedented and could even be protracted. However, diplomats have become active in calling for a ceasefire regionally and globally.

Airstrikes, artillery, and heavy shelling have also been used in the fight between the both forces.

Volker Perthes, the head of the UN mission in Sudan, told the Security Council in a closed-door session, "At least 185 people have been killed and another 1,800 injured in the ongoing conflict." Perthes told reporters after the meeting, "The current situation is very unclear. So it is very difficult to say where the balance of power is shifting because of the conflict."

Earlier on Monday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Sudan‍‍`s warring parties to "immediately cease hostilities". He warned that a further escalation of the fighting could be "devastating for the country and the region."

Earlier, Sudanese doctors had reported the death toll of around 100 civilians in the fighting, as well as the death of "a large number" of fighters from both sides. However, the number of casualties is believed to be much higher, as many people injured in the conflict did not reach hospitals for treatment.
