At least 100 dead, dozens missing as storm lashes Philippines

Officials confirmed on Monday, nearly 100 people have died in one of the most destructive storms in Philippines this year with dozens feared missing in a mudslide-hit mountainside village, while more than a million others were swamped by floodwater in several provinces.

The Bangsamoro autonomous region of Maguindanao was swamped by extremely high rains put on by Tropical Storm Nalgae, and at least 53 of the 98 fatalities, most of which were caused by flooding and landslides, were residents of that area. On Sunday, the storm left a route of disaster across a significant portion of the archipelago as it moved out of the nation and into the South China Sea.

The disaster-response agency also reported 69 people were injured and at least 63 others remain missing.

Around 1 million people were lashed by the storm, including 4,100 houses and 16,260 hectares (40,180 acres) of rice and other crops were damaged by floodwaters, officials said.
