Those behind national grid failure to be sacked: Nasrul

The government is set to take stern action against those responsible for the recent national power grid failure within the next two days by terminating their jobs and taking departmental action against them, said State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid.

Millions of people were left without electricity in most of Bangladesh, except some parts in Rangpur, after a transmission line tripped in the eastern part of the country on October 4.

Addressing a public meeting in Keraniganj, a suburb of Dhaka city, Nasrul on Saturday said, “We are yet to receive the written probe report, but we were informed that management by employees was one of the reasons behind the failure”.

The state minister said they had asked the Power Division to suggest the names of those behind it. "We will terminate all of them and take divisional action."

On October 6, the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh formed a seven-member committee to identify the reasons behind the national grid failure that caused a seven-hour blackout across most of Bangladesh.

The committee had three days to complete the investigation and submit its report.

"We were informed that the grid failure was more of a management error," he added.     \

Following the grid failure, all power plants tripped one after another and electricity supply went off in Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Barisal, and Mymensingh divisions.

Electricity supply in Dhaka and its adjoining areas will soon be eased as restoring power transmission in the eastern zone from western needs some more time, Nasrul said.

Replying to a question, Nasrul said the government has no plan to cut fuel oil prices right now as fuel oil crisis is deteriorating globally. But he said there is no possibility to adjust the prices of fuel oils upward right now.
