Survivors today claimed there was no emergency exit in the seven-story commercial building on Bailey Road that caught fire yesterday.

They pointed out how people went to enormous trouble to save their lives while receiving treatment in hospitals.

There were no fire safety measures at the Bailey Road building where a horrific fire last night killed at least 46 people, according to Fire Service and Civil Defence Director General Brig Gen Md Main Uddin.

Talking to reporters in front of the Green Cozy Cottage Shopping Mall around 12:30pm, Main Uddin said, "There was no fire safety in the building. There was only a small stairwell in the whole building."

He said that the department had previously  sent three notices to the building owners as part of its usual monitoring.

"There was monitoring, so we had given notice," he added.
