Ex-SP Babul Akter faces second DSA suit in a month

The Superintendent of Police (SP) of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Chattogram Metro unit, Naima Sultana, has filed a case under the Digital Security Act (DSA) and penal code against four people, including former SP Babul Akter and expatriate journalist Ilias Hossain.

The rest two accused are Babul's brother Habibur Rahman Labu and his father Abdul Wadud Miah, confirmed Santosh Kumar Chakma, officer-in-charge (OC) of Khulshi Police Station.

The case was filed at Khulshi Police Station on Monday.

This is the second DSA case against Babul since September 27 when PBI Chief Banaj Kumar Majumder filed a case against four people including Babul under the DSA and  the Special Powers Act.

In her complaint, Naima alleged, "In order to implement an unknown agenda, a 42:21 minutes long video was made with false statements and uploaded on YouTube."

"All these things published in the video are completely false, motivated. The false defamatory statement has been published to assassinate my character due to the proper investigation of SP Babul Akhter's case and to defame me in the police department and in public," she alleged.

"Through information, we came to know that accused who is in jail now, along with Ilias Hossain and other two accused in the case, are running this propaganda by opening accounts in various social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Internet TV, etc," the complainant alleged in the case.

Moreover, the videos published by the accused are being uploaded gradually by their associates on other social media at their direct and indirect instructions and if these defamatory videos are not stopped immediately and the accused are not arrested and put on trial, it will cause great harm to the complainant and the state, the case document said.

Earlier, Babul Akter had filed a case against six police officers, including Banaj Kumar Majumder, for torturing them in PBI custody. He had filed the case on September 8 alleging custodial torture to "make a confession". On September 11, Babul filed an application with the same court seeking security in Feni jail.

On September 27, Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court rejected Babul's petition of filing the case.

Earlier on September 13, the PBI submitted a charge sheet against seven people, including Babul in the Mitu murder case.
