Accused on remand dies in police custody; police claims death by suicide

While in 2-day remand under the custody of Uttara East Police Station, an accused in a drug case has died on early Tuesday (August 3).

Rapid Action Battalion filed a case under the Narcotics Control Act against Liton (40).

Confirming the matter to the press, Deputy commissioner of Uttara Division Police Saiful Islam said Liton committed suicide by hanging himself with a part of his blanket in the prison cell.

A three-member committee led by an additional deputy commissioner has been formed to investigate the incident.

The prison cell has a CCTV camera, said the Deputy Commissioner. Moreover, a judicial inquiry on the matter will be performed by an Executive Magistrate, added he.

The body was sent to Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital in Tongi, and was declared dead upon arrival.

Liton hailed from Bogura Kahalu Upazila, and was accused in at least four cases, added the police official.

The Report tried to reach the Officer in Charge (OC) of Uttara Division Police a 5:45 PM on the same day for a comment, but there was no response.
