Government pledges review of media worker laws: Muhammad Ali Arafat

Government is reviewing the proposed ‘Media Worker Law’ including stake holder from various journalist organizations, and after their comment the legislation will be finalize, State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Muhammad Ali Arafat said at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in Segunbagicha on Saturday.

Efforts are underway to bolster support for journalists through the Journalist Welfare Trust, Mr. Arafat emphasized the government‍‍`s commitment to fostering a conducive environment for journalism in Bangladesh, aligning with the ethos of the liberation war which champions a free press and unfettered expression.

"Our aim is to ensure a thriving journalism landscape, characterized by freedom and accountability," he affirmed.

Acknowledging the role of constructive criticism in a democratic society, Arafat asserted the importance of preventing misinformation while safeguarding the free flow of information. "Collaborative efforts between the government and journalists are essential to combat the spread of false information," he stressed.

Proposals to fortify the Right to Information Act and enhance the efficacy of the Information Commission were also discussed, aiming to uphold the public‍‍`s right to access information and mitigate the proliferation of disinformation.

Highlighting the significance of professionalism in journalism, Arafat cautioned against practices that undermine the integrity of the profession. "We must confront forces that threaten democracy and freedom, and journalists play a pivotal role in this endeavor," he affirmed.

The event, moderated by Mizanur Rahman, featured insights from Acting General Secretary of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), Syed Shukur Ali Shubo, and Unity president. Arafat reiterated the government‍‍`s unwavering commitment to supporting journalism while combating misinformation and upholding democratic values.
