T20 WC: Bangladesh suffer first slip-up in campaign opener

Bangladesh met disaster in their opening game of the T20 World Cup, losing to associate member team Scotland by six runs at Al Amerat International Stadium Sunday.

Scotland basked in the glory of defeating the sixth-ranked team in the T20 ranking and triggered worries in the Bangladesh camp for the remaining phase of the tournament.

Once again, the trouble for Bangladesh was with the opening stand, this time comprising Soumya Sarkar and Liton Das, which was compounded further by the loss of wickets at crucial moments, and eventually resulting in an epic Scotland victory.

Bangladesh went to the world event on a high with series wins against Zimbabwe, Australia and New Zealand.

There were question marks though over the manner of the wins, especially against Australia and New Zealand at home.

But members of the Bangladesh team had always defended their ways and claimed there were no worries in the camp, even after the twin defeats in the official practice matches.

Bangladesh against Scotland were set to chase 141 and the surface at the Al Amerat was good to bat on.

But that was not capitalized as Liton and Soumya departed scoring five each, leaving the team reeling on 18 for two in 3.3 overs.

Experienced campaigners Shakib al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim took a rather cautious approach and when the duo did press on the gas, they gave away their respective wickets.

Shakib, who looked tired in the game, got dismissed for a 28-ball 20 to break the third wicket stand on 47 off 46.

Right-handed batsman Mushfiq looked better in the game compared to the recent past but just when he needed to stay in the middle, his premeditation went wrong.

A good length ball on the stumps, Mushfiq wanted to scoop over fine leg but went too far across the stumps, and missed the googly to see the leg stump knocked back.
