4 BCL activists suspended over grieving Sayeedi’s death on Facebook

Four Chhatra League activists were suspended and one was served with a show cause notice in Satkhira, and Thakurgaon over grieving war criminal Delwar Hossain Sayeedi’s death on Facebook.

In Satkhira, the District Chhatra League leaders said the decision to suspend the three activists was taken because their Facebook posts went against the ideology of the organisation.

The suspended BCL men are Tala Upazila Branch vice presidents Saifuddin Azad Sabuj and Mahin Islam Masum, and Simanta Adarsha College Branch Organising Secretary Ashiq Kabir.

At the same time, it has been recommended to the Central Committee of the Chhatra League to expel them permanently from the organisation, said  a press release signed by Satkhira District Chhatra League President SM Ashiqur Rahman and Secretary Md Sumon Hossain on Wednesday.

"Sayeedi was sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity. The three activists posted on Facebook grieving his death, which is against the ideology of the Bangladesh Chhatra League; as a result, they were temporarily suspended. It was also recommended to the Central Chhatra League to permanently expel them from the organisation. Screenshots of their posts were also provided," said Ashiqur.

In Thakurgaon, one BCL man was suspended and another was served with a show cause notice over the matter, according to a press release signed by Pirganj Upazila Chhatra League President Tanvir Rahman Mithu and General Secretary Nawab Hossain on Wednesday.

The suspended BCL man is Pirganj Upazila’s Sengaon BCL religious affairs secretary, Yusuf Islam. Syedpur Union BCL President Mehedi Hasan was served with the show cause, it said.

Yusuf and Mehedi’s posts went against BCL‍‍`s discipline, said Nawab, therefore, Yusuf has been suspended for three months.

An appeal has also been made to the BCL Central Committee to permanently expel both of them, he added.
