The government has been ordered by the High Court to repatriate 157 foreign nationals who have been incarcerated in Bangladeshi jails for an extended period of time.

The directive has been issued to the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, the Secretary of Home Affairs, and the Inspector General of Prisons.

The media was informed by writ petitioner counsel Bivuti Tarofder that the HC has scheduled a further order on May 28.

HC panel consisting of Justices Naima Haider and Kazi Zinat Hoque delivered the verdict after going through a report on the detainees, which was provided on January 21 by the office of the inspector general of prisons.

According to the report, 150 of the foreign individuals in custody are from India, five are from Myanmar, and one is from each of Pakistan and Nepal.

The report claims that Md Sajjad Hossain, a 45-year-old Tripura, India citizen, served out his original imprisonment sentence but ended up spending almost 20 years behind bars in Bangladesh.
