UN calls global community to shelter displaced Afghan citizens

United Nations has urged the international community to shelter the displaced citizens of Afghanistan due to political turmoil in the country. Besides, the global body also called Taliban to refrain from exiling general Afghan people.

Qatar-based news agency Aljazeera confirms the news citing a tweet of UN secretary general António Guterres.

“As the world is following events in Afghanistan with a heavy heart, I urge all countries to be willing to receive Afghan refugees & refrain from deportations. Afghans have known generations of war & hardship. They deserve our full support. Now is the time for solidarity,” Guterres tweeted.

Earlier, Washington requested Bangladesh to shelter several Afghan allies in the country which Dhaka denied. Foreign minister AK Abdul Momen confirmed the news to media on Monday (August 16).

“US administration said that they have friends in Afghanistan who are in trouble. It is relocating those friends to various countries. As, Bangladesh sheltered 11 lakh Rohingya people, the US requested to shelter displaced Afghan citizens,” Momen said.
