Speaker: Govt improving fate of oppressed, deprived people

Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Sunday said the present government is working relentlessly to improve the fate of oppressed and deprived people.

“People of the country are enjoying benefits of 100% electrification and infrastructural development and the country's economy is standing on a solid foundation today. Bangladesh is at a unique height in the world today,” she said.

The speaker said this while addressing a function arranged for distribution of bicycles, sewing machines, wheelchairs and spray machines to beneficiaries at Laldighee Adarsha High School premises at Pirganj as chief guest.

On her arrival, the speaker was welcomed with flowers by local public representatives and leaders of various organizations.

Presided over by acting president of Pirganj upazila Awami League Professor Nurul Amin Raza, its General Secretary and Pirganj Municipality Mayor ASM Tajimul Islam Shamim moderated the function.

Vice-president of Pirganj Upazila Awami League and Chairman of local Kabilpur Union Parishad Rabiul Islam Rabi, President of Kabilpur Union Awami League Rafiqul Islam Bakul and General Secretary Saiful Islam Laju also addressed the occasion.

The speaker said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina does not believe in city-centric development only.

“The prime minister has arranged development plans to make all civic facilities of towns available in every village. Because of her strategy and skills, we are progressing from the status of a less developed country to a developing country,” she said.

She said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has vowed to realize the rights and demands of Bengalis by neglecting his own demands through 23 years of political movements and struggles.

“Because of a great leader like Bangabandhu, we got an independent and sovereign Bangladesh, a red-green victory flag and the best constitution in the world,” she said.

She termed the declaration of November 4 as National Constitution Day by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as a milestone step.

About the development of her own constituency (Pirganj), the speaker said union women training centres are being established for local mothers and sisters.

“Murals of the Father of the Nation and Shaheed Minars are being installed in every union and more developmental projects will be taken up if required,” she said.

She especially called upon the children and teenagers to join different social development activities, including sports, instead of being confined indoors.

The speaker said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the able daughter of Bangabandhu, is working to change the fortune of common people. As Bangladesh has developed under her leadership, Pirganj is also developing in the same continuity.

“Old age allowance, widow allowance, maternity allowance and other allowances have been fully opened up under social safety nets across the country,” she said, and appealed to all to stand with the present government in all development activities.

Later, the speaker exchanged views with local public representatives and residents at Pirganj upazila parishad auditorium.

On the occasion, she unveiled the cover of the book “Mohakabyk Mujib” published by Pirganj upazila administration marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Md Asif Ahasan, Superintendent of Police Md Ferdous Ali Chowdhury, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Biroda Rani Roy, Upazila Awami League Vice President Shahidul Islam Pintu, local and district level Awami League and organizational leaders, dignitaries and media workers were present.
