HC stays MP Harun’s 5-year jail term

The High Court (HC) has upheld the five-year sentence handed down by the lower court to BNP MP Harunur Rashid in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

On Thursday (December 9) HC Justice Selim's bench dismissed MP Harun's appeal and stayed the five-year sentence. 

Lawyer Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon appeared for MP Harun in the court on the same day. He was accompanied by Syed Mizanur Rahman and HM Sanjeed Siddiqui. 

On the other hand, lawyer Md. Khurshid Alam Khan was stood in favor of the ACC.

On October 21, 2019, Judge Sheikh Nazmul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge's Court - 4 sentenced MP Harun to five years imprisonment under Section 409 of the Penal Code. At the same time, the court slapped him a fine of Tk 50 lakh and another six months imprisonment for not paying the fine.
