Dhaka, too, reels from Cyclone Sitrang

As Cyclone Sitrang started to show its influence in coastal districts since Monday afternoon with gusty wind and intermittent rains, the capital is also suffering from it.

Parts of Dhaka city have already been inundated, causing serious issues to the city people, mostly those returning home from work. This is affecting not only the movement of people walking on foot but vehicles carrying passengers and goods. 

A number of trees were uprooted due to the strong wind, weighing on the situation, which also led to traffic congestion was also reported across the city.

In the evening, a rickshaw-puller was crushed to death in Dhaka's Hazaribagh area after a wall collapsed due to gusty wind owing to Cyclone Sitrang.

Two others, the passenger of the rickshaw and a motorcyclist, were injured in the incident.

Earlier in the day, the tip of cyclone Sitrang has hit the coastal areas of Bangladesh. Cyclone Sitrang is likely to intensify further, move in a north, north-easterly direction and cross Barishal-Chattogram coast near Khepupara by midnight or early Tuesday, the latest Met Office bulletin said.

The full cyclone will cut its path through Barishal and Chattogram coasts by midnight, the weather department said.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department asked Mongla and Payra seaports to hoist danger signal No. 7.

The coastal districts of Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Jhalakathi, Pirojpur, Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Barishal, Lakshmipur, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni and their offshore islands also came under danger signal No. 7.

Chattogram and Cox's Bazar ports were advised to hoist danger signal No. 6.
