Death toll in Jhalokathi launch fire jumps at 44

Two more bodies have been found following the deadly fire that broke out in MV Abhijan-10 launch.

Police recovered the bodies from Bishkhali river in the area of Jhalokathi Sadar upazila on Tuesday morning.

Assistant director Md. Kobad Ali Sarkar of Fire Service and Civil Defence in Barishal confirmed the matter to TheReport.live.

“The rescue operation resumed at the Sugandha river for 5th day on Tuesday. Bodies of a youth presumably aged 30-32 and another teen were found. However, their identity could not be known yet,” Kobad Ali said.

With the recovery, the death toll now reached at 44. 

Locals saw the body floating on the river on Monday and informed police. Later the law enforcers from Rajapur and Jhalokathi police stations recovered the body, police said. 

The rescue team comprised of fire service and civil defence and coastguard resumed search operation in the river. Relatives are waiting along the river.

Besides, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will start collection of sample from relatives this afternoon. The samples will later be sent to Dhaka for DNA test.
