Chittagong jail super among 5 sued over torture of prisoner

A Chittagong court on Monday directed to record as a case the complaint filed by a lifer’s wife against the senior superintendent of Chittagong Central Jail and four others for torturing her husband.

The court also directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police to investigate the case.

Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sheikh Ashfaqur Rahman passed the order after a hearing.

On November 25, Parvin Akter, the wife of convict Md Shamim, filed the complaint against the five with the court of Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Sarwar Jahan, said plaintiff’s lawyer Syed Motaher Hossain.

The defendants in the case are Senior Jail Superintendent Shafiqul Islam Khan, jailor Dewan Mohammad Tariqul Islam, Deputy Jailor Md Saimur, and Jail Guard Sabuj Dash and Subedar Md Emdad Hossain.

Shamim has remained behind the bars since 2004 after being arrested in a murder case. He was admitted to Chittagong Jail Hospital until July 17

On July 12, when he demanded food, accused subedar Md Emdad beat him up.

On July 17, the five accused again tortured Shamim by tying him up to a tree. He was shifted to Comilla Central Jail the same day.

Being informed about the torture through a phone call from Shamim, his wife on August 22 appealed to the Chittagong district commissioner to take action against the accused.

On November 11, during routine attendance, Shamim apprised the Chittagong court of his alleged ordeal.

Senior Jail Superintendent Shafiqul could not be contacted for comments.

On April 24, 2007, Shamim was sentenced to death in a murder case. However, five years later, a higher court commuted his sentence to life imprisonment.
