Sunday`s Awami League meeting in Chunarughat upazila, Habiganj, descended into chaos due to the presence of local lawmaker Syed Sayedul Haque, also known as Barrister Suman.
Party sources claim that the Awami League`s Chunarughat upazila unit arranged an extended meeting and a viewpoint exchange on Sunday morning at the Chunarughat upazila parishad auditorium, with independent lawmaker Syed Sayedul Haque, who represents Habiganj-4 (Chunarughat-Madhabpur), as the chief guest.
Party`s Upazila unit President Akbar Hossain presided over the ceremony, which got underway at 4:30 p.m.
At one point during the meeting, immediately before the MP`s speech, the upazila unit organising secretary, Sathi Muktadir, asked, "Was the meeting between the lawmaker and the Awami League men, a party decision? Has the party accepted Barrister Suman? If not, why are we exchanging ideas with him?"
Following his speech, chaos erupted among the leaders and activists present.
Akbar Hossain, the president of Upazila unit AL, then made an effort to pacify the party men by telling them that the district Awami League had decided to call the meeting.
In addition, the politician desired to discuss issues and viewpoints with activists and party leaders.
However, Akbar could not be reached over phone for comments.
As the chaos escalated, legislator Syed Sayedul Haque attempted to calm the audience.
He explained, "You are all my guardians. Many of the leaders here have more political experience than myself. Despite becoming independent, I continue to remain an Awami League activist. I became a candidate at the request of the party head. I was elected with your votes. So I`ve come today to discuss ideas with you in order to help our community grow."
Leaders and activists continued to exchange heated arguments during his speech. Later, senior authorities intervened to calm the scene.
