Winter Transfer Window Closes

The winter transfer window closed on Monday and it was one of the quietest transfer windows ever.

Usually, the big clubs spend the big money in the summer transfer window because that allows them the chance to evaluate and train their new players before the season kicks off. On that note, winter transfer windows are usually less busy. With that being said, the 2021 January transfer window was a bit more on the quiet side than anything else.

Out of the notable transfers, Luca Jovic of Real Madrid must be mentioned. The Serbian striker returned to his former team Eintracht Frankfurt on a loan deal. Jovic marked his return with a goal within 10 minutes of coming off from the bench.

Mesut Özil, the world cup winner German playmaker had his falling out with Arsenal and the two have been stuck with each other for quite a while, both looking for a way out. Turkish club Fenerbahce offered a solution for both of them and Özil joined Fenerbahce on a free transfer. Arsenal has acquired Real Madrid youngster Martin Ødegaard on a loan deal till the end of the season. Many are considering this move as a replacement for Mesut Özil.

Meanwhile Liverpool have been busy, signing Preston defender Ben Davies a loan deal and Schalke’s Ozan Kabak to deal with their centre-back crisis after Joel Matip suffered an ankle injury and was ruled out for the rest of the season. Their attacking midfielder Minamino has struggled to make an impact at Anfield since joining last year and has accepted a loan deal to Southampton for the remainder of the season.

West Ham have signed Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard on a loan deal for until the end of the season. The English attacking midfielder will wear the No 11 shirt at West Ham. Lingard hasn’t made an appearance this season. Sami Khedira has left Juventus on a free transfer for Hertha Berlin.

Arsenal Defender Sead Kolasinac has moved to Bundesliga team Schalke on a loan deal due to lack of playing time. Wolverhampton boss Nuno Espirito Santo has added a new striker to his ranks for the second half of the season as he acquired the loan signing of Willian Jose from Real Sociedad with an option to buy at the end of the season.
