Remembering a Dark Day in the History of Football

Football is so much more than just a game. So many emotions are tied to it. The Munich Tragedy is one of those moments that makes our face go grim, yet we remember the day and pray for all that were involved.

The Munich air disaster occurred on 6 February 1958 when British European Airways Flight 609 crashed on its attempts to take off from a slush-covered runway at Munich-Riem Airport. The aircraft was carrying the Manchester United football team, well known as the "Busby Babes", along with supporters and journalists.

The team was returning from a European Cup match in Belgrade. Manchester United were aiming to become the third club to win three successive English Football League titles; they were six points behind League leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers with 14 games still to play before the tragedy shook the entire world.

Thousands of people usually gather in Manchester and Munich each year to pay their respects, but this year fans are being asked to watch an online pre-recorded service at home. United players will wear black armbands and lay wreaths ahead of their games this weekend.
