Another accused held over Narail teacher humiliation

Police have arrested another man for humiliating acting principal of Mirzapur United College Swapan Kumar Biswas in Narail Sadar Upazila. 

 

The arrested is Nur Nabi, 37, son of late Fayez Chowkidar of Gobra village in Kalora union of Narail Sadar upazila.

 

He was captured from in front of Manihar Cinema Hall in Jashore around 11:30 pm on Sunday. Later, he was taken to Sadar police station.

 

With Nur Nabi’s arrest, five people were arrested so far over the incident.

 

Earlier, police arrested four people. They are Narail Sadar Upazila Jubo Dal convening committee member Monirul Islam alias Rubel, 26, a trader Shaon Khan, 26, and battery-run auto-rickshaw driver Syed Rimon Ali, 22, and Rahmatullah Biswas, 24, a final year student of Khulna Government BL College. 

 

The first three of them live in Mirzapur village of Sadar upazila. And Rahmatullah is from Rukhali village.

 

Police further said that the court had granted remand to each of the four accused arrested earlier for three days. 

 

On June 27, police filed the case against 170 to 180 unidentified persons. 

 

On June 17, an eleventh grader of the college posted a picture of Nupur Sharma, suspended spokesperson of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, and paid respect to her. 

 

As the Facebook post by the student created uproar in the area, the college’s principal Swapan Kumar Biswas discussed the matter with teachers, father of the student and some members of the governing body.

 

As per the decision taken during the discussion, the accused student was handed over to the police on the college premises. 

 

A number of college students and some outsiders created an obstruction when the police went to detain the accused student. 

 

Later the authorities informed the deputy commissioner and the SP about the incident.

 

When principal Swapan Kumar and the accused student were forcefully brought out from a room of the first floor of the college building at around 4:00pm, some people placed garlands of shoes around their necks.

 

 

Local deputy commissioner and the SP were present on the college premises during the incident.
