Temple well roof collapses in India; 35 dead, 14 rescued

The roof of a well collapsed while performing puja on the occasion of Ram Navami in Madhya Pradesh, India. So far 35 people died in this incident. 14 people were rescued in injured condition.

The incident took place on Thursday (March, 30) morning at Sri Baleshwar temple in Patelnagar, Indore.

On the morning of Ram Navami, a large number of devotees gather in the temples of Madhya Pradesh. There was an abandoned well on the temple premises. The mouth of the well was blocked with a concrete slab, the slab breaks under the pressure due to excess people climbing up. About 50 people fell inside.

Indore‍‍`s district magistrate Ilayaraja T said, ‍‍`‍‍`A total of 35 people have died, and one is missing. 14 people were rescued alive. Two people returned home safely after treatment. A rescue operation is underway to find the missing."

Several witnesses said that some people were trapped under the collapsed roof of the well. The police, fire brigade, and state disaster response forces are trying to rescue them quickly.

India‍‍`s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan have expressed grief over the incident.
