News of Amartya Sen’s demise, is it true?

A News of nobel laureate and Indian economist Amartya Sen has been sparked on Tuesday.

However, reputed Indian media outlets including the Times of India, the Deccan Herald run news of Amartya’s death quoting Press Trust of India (PTI).

 

The PTI, later twitted in X that Nandana Dev Sen denies her father Nobel prize winner Amartya Sen’s news of death.


Baba is totally fine, was what Nandana Sen, the daughter of renowned economist Amartya Sena, posted on X (formerly Twitter) after several posts speculating about his death were widely shared on social media.

She also shared a photo along with the post which showed her and her daughter posing with the Nobel winner.

"Friends, thanks for your concern but it‍‍`s fake news: Baba is totally fine. We just spent a wonderful week together with family in Cambridge," she wrote.

Later the state-run news agency updated the tweet and stated: “Deleting tweet on Amartya Sen based on a post from an unverified account in the name of Claudia Goldin. Actor Nandana Dev Sen denies news of death of her father, Nobel prize winner Amartya Sen.”

Pratichi Trust founded by Professor Amartya said the news of his demise was fake.

Many Bangladeshi top media outlets also run the news of Amartys‍‍`s death quoting latest  economics nobel laureate Claudia Goldin. 

Amartya Sen is currently a Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University. He formerly served as Master of Trinity College at the University of Cambridge. He was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1998 and India‍‍`s highest civilian honour the Bharat Ratna the following year for his contribution to welfare economics.
