Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) has been declared closed after factional clashes of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).

The matter was disclosed in a circular signed by the registrar of the university Professor Faruk-uz-Zaman Chowdhury on Tuesday afternoon.

In view of the ongoing tense situation, the academic activities and residential halls of the university have been declared closed from Tuesday to 5 July. The male students have been asked to leave the dormitories within 5pm today while the female within 10am Wednesday, the statement read.

The decision was taken at an hour-long emergency meeting of the university's vice-chancellor, dean, director of the institute, registrar, department head, provost and director of student welfare.

Earlier, two factions of the BCL clashed in the campus on Sunday and Saturday. One side is the supporters of Deputy Minister of Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel. The other group is known on campus as a follower of former city mayor AJM Nasir Uddin. The clash erupted from a trivial matter.
