Rangamati journo, facing DSA suit, now out on bail

The editor of Dainik Parbatta Chattogram, a Rangamati-based daily, has been freed on bail a day after he was arrested in a case filed under the controversial Digital Security Act (DSA).

Rangamati Senior Judicial Magistrate Fatema Begum granted bail to the journalist on Wednesday noon, his lawyer Muktar Ahmed told reporters.

Fazle Elahi, also the district correspondent of several other media outlets, was held on Tuesday evening, confirmed Kabir Hossen, officer-in-charge of Rangamati Police Station, soon after after they received an arrest warrant in the case filed against him.

Naznin Anwar, daughter of former lawmaker (reserved seat) Firoza Begum Chinu, lodged the case with Cybercrime Tribunal last year over a report published in Dainik Parbatta Chattogram on DC Park irregularities, he said.

As criticism keeps growing over the legislature, Law Minister Anisul Huq very often says no journalist can be arrested immediately after filing of any DSA case.

Even on May 31, he said cases under the DSA are decreasing in the country due to the government initiative.
