Rajshahi and Sylhet city election at a glance

Voting will be held for Rajshahi and Sylhet City Corporation areas on Wednesday (June 21). 

This year‍‍`s voting environment is very calm as BNP one of the main opposition of the country, has boycotted this year‍‍`s city elections. 

The Election Commission fears that the turnout of voters will be low due to the rain. Although the ruling party Awami League leaders claim that the polls will be held in a celebratory manner. 

Sylhet City Corporation was established in 2002. Sylhet city elections have been held 4 times so far. Apart from of Awami League or BNP, no one has been elected as mayor there so far.

On the other hand Rajshahi City Corporation started being operating in 90s. 

Meanwhile, election equipment have been distributed among the concerned person of pooling centres on Tuesday (June 20) amid continuous rain in both area. 

Returning officer Faisal Quader said that if the rain continues like this, the number of voters in the centres may decrease. The returning officer informed about this fear during the distribution of EVM machines at Abul Mal Abdul Muhit Sports Complex in the city this morning.

In Rajshahi, the materials were distributed from New Govt. Degree College in the morning, and officials there also feared about the rain. 

According to the office of returning officers in Sylhet, there are a total of 4,87,753 voters in the city. There have been 42 general wards. Eight candidates are contesting for the mayor post where 273 for the ward councillor post and 87 for the reserved ward (14 posts) councillor post. There are a total of 1,364 polling booths in 190 polling centres.

Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has 30 wards. As many as four mayoral candidates are vying for the mayor post. Around 46 candidates are contesting for 10 reserved women councilor posts and 111 candidates for 30 general councilor posts. Total voters in this city are 3,51,982 people. There are 155 polling stations and 1153 polling booths in RCC area.
