Polling suspended after candidate dies in Debidwar of Cumilla

The voting for Vani union parishad at Debidwar upazilla in Cumilla has been postponed as chairman aspirant, Md. Nuruzzaman Bhuyan, died on Sunday night. Polls for chairman, member and reserved female members have been differed.

A public notification was issued around 11 pm Sunday night canceling the voting. The balloting was scheduled to today under the seventh phase of UP election along with 14 unions of the upazilla.

Nuruzzaman was president of the union Awami League unit, sitting chairman of the union and nominated by the party.

His brother Kamrul Islam said, Chhatra Dal leader Abdul Kaiyum, nephew of independent candidate Jalal Uddin and a resident of neighbouring Chandina upazilla, went to Noagaon primary school polling centre on Sunday.

Seeing Kaiyum there, Nuruzzaman grilled him and asked why he was there being an outsider leading an altercation. Kaiyum kicked on his (Nuruzzaman) chest and he fell on the ground. Later, Nuruzzaman was taken to a Cumilla hospital where he succumbed.

However, denying the allegation independent candidate Jalal Uddin said, Nuruzzaman suffered a cardiac arrest while the altercation was going on. None kicked him.

Md. Amirul, Senior Assistant Superintendent of Devdiwar circle, said, no official complaint was lodged so far. Details could be informed later.
