Pakistani govt. planned to hang Bangabandhu: PM Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina remarked that the then-Pakistani government had plans to hang Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on sedition charges in addition to imprisoning him.

A grave also dug near the jail, the premier added.

Sheikh Hasina, also the ruling party president came up with these remarks at the discussion meeting organized by Awami League on the occasion of Bangabandhu’s Homecoming Day on Tuesday at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center.

She said, “The victory and independence of this country got completion only after the return of the father of the nation on January 10, 1972. On that day, he declared that he intended to build a developed and prosperous Bangladesh.”

She cited the achievements of the Bangabandhu-led government during the post-war period, stating that “Our country’s constitution was introduced in just nine months while it took 11 years for Pakistan’s constitution to be presented.”

She continued by saying that only under Bangabandhu’s rule, the GDP growth of Bangladesh exceeded nine percent.

Expressing her gratitude towards the late former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for making the most significant contribution as a foreigner in Bangladesh’s liberation war, Sheikh Hasina said that she (Indira Gandhi) had lobbied numerous countries to set Bangabandhu free. After receiving pressure from multiple countries, Yahya Khan ultimately released the father of the nation.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman returned home on January 10, 1972 after a nine-month war, during which he had been imprisoned in Pakistan. Since then the day has been observed as Homecoming Day Bangabandhu.
